Yannick Noah on 'Gay List'
More on the gay witch hunt that has swept the Cameroon: Yannick Noah, the tennis star turned singer, is one of the many well-known figures who was named to that well publicized list of 50 alleged homosexuals. Noah is a Frenchman of Cameroonian descent and a well-known playboy with women—a history that means very little to the sensational journalists in the central African nation.
Most of those “outed” vehemently deny the allegations, which they say are based on rumours spread by enemies. The wave of homophobic articles has created an unprecedented boon for the tabloid press, which is running headlines such as 'The queers are among us'.
The campaign began at Christmas when the Catholic archbishop condemned the European Union and its lax stand on homosexuals. Since then, La Météo, Nouvelle Afrique and L’Anecdote have published lists of politicians, entertainers and athletes who are supposedly gay. For anyone who reads Francais, the Radio France Internationale report is here.

But, Rod, what's your feelings about this sort of outing-- especially since it's motivated by virulent anti-gay sentiment (and probably a lot of simple greed too). You don't think further desseminating the names here (of those who may or may not be gay, but in any case have been outed purely to discredit them and damage their public images) supports that virulence and greed? Just wondering.
