Overnight, an even more callous spin to Tom DeLay's cowardly exit strategy. Redstate.org claims that the disgraced congressman's district "in addition to redistricting, has undergone demographic changes with the influx of former New Orleans residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina." In other words, too many black people. Sorry, we don't buy that excuse: Not very likely that the huddled masses have taken over DeLay's gated subdivision.
The black community is not more homophobic than society-at-large. The NGLTF releases a detailed new study that outlines the "highly organized, well-funded campaign" by the far-right to spread anti-gay messages in black churches in order to exploit voters. But research shows most blacks aren't preoccupied with the culture wars. "Issues like the economy, racism, health care, the war, and education are the issues most African Americans rate as the most important. [The study] pointed out that Republican Senators and members of the House have poor voting records when it comes to issues like civil rights and social issues." Despite attempt to use LGBT equality as a wedge issue, new research shows about half of all blacks would support some form of legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Source: Abstract and PDF.
