Justice, Jamaican Style
It's been a month after the brutal stabbing deaths of a Jamaican lesbian couple and the prime suspected has not even been questioned. Human Rights Watch has asked authorities why there has been no movement in the investigation.
On June 29th, the mutilated bodies of Candice Williams and Phoebe Myrie were found in a sealed septic tank behind the house they shared. According to the Jamaica Star, at that time the police identified a lead suspect.
That man is Dwayne Lewis, Williams' former boyfriend and the father of her year-old infant. However, "Lewis has not been questioned, much less arrested," says Human Rights Watch director Scott Long. His agency has documented "an atmosphere of homophobic intolerance and violence" in the island nation.
It's unfortunate that crimes such as these have become quite commonplace in the island paradise, and, have been minimized by the nation's media. In the last two years, two of the island's most prominent gay activists—Brian Williamson and Steve Harvey—were killed. A crowd even celebrated over Williamson's mutilated body.
