News: Morehouse Anti-Gay Firing, Inmate HIV, Episcopalian Gays

2006_09_12_morehouse_2· Anti-gay bias at the Morehouse School of Medicine? Ashland Johnson, a former employee, says she was fired because she is a lesbian. Johnson says her former supervisor discovered an e-mail from her lesbian partner on her computer. Afterward, she was locked out of the system and her office keys were taken away.

· Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) introduced HR 6038, a bill that would require federal prisons to provide HIV tests for inmates at the beginning and end of their incarcerations. However, inmates may refuse testing. Waters says this is needed to address HIV/AIDS among blacks, who account for a disproportionate share of the country's prison inmates and HIV infections.

· The Church of England has named a gay man with HIV as the priest of a parish in the London area—believed to be the first time the church has knowingly appointed a gay, HIV poz priest. Meanwhile, senior Anglican bishops have called a temporary truce and begin talks to avert a total schism in the Episcopal Church over the issue of homosexuality.
