... And a once backward nation shall lead them all.

BL

Here, here Taylor!

South Africa is a shining light for us all. Do not say that all Africans or African Americans are homophobic. We are not.

Shabaka

Bravo!! Well, most sane people have dropped that myth a while ago, BL, people of African descent are no more homophobic than anyone else. The rest of the World should follow in the footsteps of South Africans.

Bobby

And imagine, the US once called South Africa "a nation of savages." Who are the savages now?

Big.Daddy

Wow, I wonder what it takes to become a citizen of South Africa?

Daniel

South Africa isn't Africa, and compared to, for example, Europe, the rest of Africa generally has some pretty intolerant political policies and socio-cultural views on homosexuality. This one bill in the richest, most stable, and european influenced country in Africa should not be overestimated in importance.

Derrick from Philly

"...European influenced country in Africa"

If it weren't for European missionaries, would any of sub-Sahara Africa be homophobic? European influence had nothing to do with what happened in Rwanda fourteen years ago? Certainly, there is a lot of corruption and backward governing in Africa, but to say that European colonial rule had nothing to do with it is almost outrageous. I guess there's no European influence in the Baltic nations, Poland, and Russia where they violently attack gay people for trying to have pride celebrations.

Excuse me, sir, there is something very African about Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu, the men responsible for South Africa's determination to get rid of discrimination, racism, and persecution of minorities.

CA

Daniel, your comment was ridiculous.

Try visiting Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Albania, or, ahem, Poland and Russia, whose anti-gay mob violence has been seen around the world.

TheRevKev

WOW....JOHANNESBURG IS LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER EVERYDAY!!! WOW!!!!

GOD KEEP AMERICA!

Shabaka

Daniel, my man...Africa indeed has inherited a lot from Europe, including sexism, homophobia, racism, tribalism (Rwanda as Derrick pointed out)and just about any other bigotry you can come up with. So ain't nobody underestimating European influence upon Africa. What Africans are trying to do is actually break free from those shackles!

Tyler

Wow! This is amazing!

Daniel
