The base is not pleased: "For years, Mary Cheney's openness about her sexual orientation had posed a dilemma for conservative activists who admire Dick Cheney's stance on many issues but consider homosexuality a sin." Here is a choice quote from Carrie Gordon Earll, a policy analyst for the Focus on the Family. "Just because you can conceive a child outside a one-woman, one-man marriage doesn't mean it's a good idea. Love can't replace a mother and a father."
The Associated Press also quotes Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America—more accurately described as a vocal anti-gay, anti-women’s rights group here—who said it was "very disappointing that a celebrity couple like this" would bring a child into the world, noting that "they are encouraging people who don't have the advantages they have."
Last night, Crouse also appeared on CNN's AC 360 and went a step further when Anderson Cooper noted the irony of Mary Cheney attempting to raise a child in Virginia, whose laws are quite hostile to gay parents. Crouse dismissed the notion, saying it was "Not about Mary Cheney ... not about Heather [Poe] .... It's not about any of those instances, but it's about what is best for children" and said crowed that "the magic ticket" for childhood success was a mother and father.
Over at the Free Republic, describing the sentiment as "outrage" would be an understatement. There are over 175 comments responding the AP article and Cheney's pregnancy, many of the responses tempered because of Mary's pedigree. One freeper got it right, even th we're not sure was this sarcasm: "WTF is Bush supposed to do about it, yell at her? And what are the Cheneys supposed to do, quit loving their daughter? I'm quite certain the kid will turn out just fine with Dick and Lynn as grandparents."
