Two questions: First, who's the daddy? Second, was this cleared with President Bush and the anti-gay, anti-same-sex marriage crowd? In any event, it should be hilarious to watch the delicate dance that will be practiced by the leading gay-bashers of the Republican Party and its enablers on the far-right. How can you gay-bash the Vice President's daughter without insulting the man himself?
According to The Washington Post, Cheney and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby which will be due in late spring. Lynne Cheney is also said to be in "eager anticipation" to become a grandmother for the sixth time, but, her fascination with lesbian erotica is well-documented. More from WaPo:
Cheney has described her relationship with Poe—whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla—as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family. In an interview with the Post six months ago, when asked if she and Poe wanted children, Cheney said that was a "conversation I think I should have with Heather first."
But they're not married and are treated as second-class citizens under Virginia law:
In November, Virginia voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions; state law is unclear on whether Poe could have full legal rights as a parent of Cheney's child. The circumstances of the pregnancy will remain private, said the source close to the couple.
It gets worst. AmericaBlog notes that "Virginia had already set up new Jim Crow laws targeting gays two years ago. Those laws may vitiate any legal agreement between the two, period, about anything." That means any will, custody arrangement, visitation or child care agreement could be struck down by the courts. New definition of irony: The "family values" laws championed by President Bush and Vice President Cheney are now used against a member of Cheney's own family.

we should all send "congrats grandpa!" cards to the white house

The Virginian "Affirmation of Marriage Act - hmm... is it still in effect? Any news about how it is faring/has fared in the courts? It's shocking that such a patently unenforceable piece of legislation could even be passed. The authors of the law must be legal idiots, but also, what can be said for the legislators who voted for it? Lord, give us back some professionalism in those who govern us!
