News: Hillary vs Obama, Biden, Bush AIDS Audit, Mehcad Brooks

2006_10_25_clinton_obama

· Is Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton still the leading Democratic candidate for president? Yes, but barely. A new poll of New Hampshire voters shows 22 percent support New York's junior senator just one percentage point ahead of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). Last month, a similar poll by The Concord Monitor showed Clinton leading Obama by 23 percentage points. Over the weekend, an Iowa poll shows Clinton in fourth place in that state behind John Edwards, Barack Obama, and outgoing Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.

· Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice: America is ready for a black president.

· Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) says he intends to run for president in 2008. The incoming Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman says he will oppose any effort by the White House to escalate U.S troops in Iraq as part of a new war strategy.

2006_12_26_mehcad· Rod 2.0 fave Mehcad Brooks returns to the big screen. The former Desperate Houseboy will be part of the ensemble cast of Oscar winner Paul Haggis' upcoming movie, which has the working title In the Valley of Elah. Tommy Lee Jones, Susan Sarandon, Charlize Theron and James Franco will co-star. Haggis wrote and directed "Crash," which won the Best Picture Oscar this year.

· Poor record-keeping has hampered President George Bush's worldwide AIDS effort. Investigators found the three-year-old, $15 billion program has "overcounted and undercounted thousands patients" and was "unable to verify" claims of success by local non-government organizations. "For at least one country, Guyana, incorrect numbers made it into this year’s annual report to Congress. It cited services to 5,200 AIDS orphans, but auditors documented fewer than 300, many of them not even affected by AIDS."
