· The Gentle Lady from California. Nancy Pelosi (CA) becomes the first female Speaker of the House and the second in line to assume the presidency. "This is an historic moment—for the Congress, and for the women of America. It is a moment for which we have waited more than 200 years." Also, a blunt warning to President Bush on Iraq: “The American people rejected an open-ended obligation to a war without end," which brought Democrats to their feet.
· Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: No issue is more important to the country than finding an end to "an intractable war in Iraq." The Nevada Democrat reminded the President that it's his responsibility to remove US troops from a dangerous civil war.
· Video at Think Progress of Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) introducing himself to Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) on the House floor. Goode attacked Ellison—the first Muslim elected to Congress—and warned “there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office.”
