DEVELOPING. The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the anti-gay right-wing televangelist, dies after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University in Virginia. Early reports are that heart failure was the cause.
Falwell founded the Moral Majority in 1979. Among many controversial statements, you may recall his immediate reaction to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001:
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"
Falwell later told CNN, "I would never blame any human being except the terrorists, and if I left that impression with gays or lesbians or anyone else, I apologize."
