CDC Tracking "Serious" Strain of Syphilis Among Gay Men
A "serious" new strain of syphilis has been found among gay men "engaging in risky, unprotected sex" with multiple partners, according to the Centers for Disease Controls.
Researchers discovered the strain while tracking a select group of HIV-positive gay men in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City and San Diego. All patients report early neurosyphilis, a "rare manifestation of syphilis usually occurring within the first year of infection" that can lead to blindness or stroke. The human immunodeficiency virus comprises the immune system, so these men are more prone to infections and disease. However, the study reports "the men involved have the attitude that they do not need safe-sex practices because they already are infected with HIV."
Probably not the news you want to hear on a Monday morning, but, going into a holiday, perhaps something to keep in mind.
