More problems for the Republican National Committee and state party chairs. As the Republican "brand" continues to lose its value—donations, popularity, traction—among voters, another disruption has been introduced into to the 2008 election cycle: Alan Keyes has announced he will once again run for president.
The social conservative, anti-gay black Republican ran for president in 1996 and 2000. He also ran unsuccessfully for Senate from his home state of Maryland, and, as the GOP's affirmative action candidate against Barack Obama in Illinois in 2004. Keyes says he is running for president because he is"unmoved" by the "lack of moral courage" shown by the current Republican presidential field. Keyes will participate in tonight's "Values Voters" debate in Florida and is expected he will compete for the same social conservative base as Sam Brownback, Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson.
Keyes has become infamous or his anti-gay rants, once calling gays "selfish hedonis[ts]." In 2004, his daughter Maya Marcel-Keyes came out as lesbian. Alan Keyes stopped speaking to his daughter and refused to continue paying for her college education because she is gay.
