Calling him the "the unholy avenger for the Republican party", Bishop Harry Jackson, the well-known black anti-gay mega church pastor, clocks in at Number 2 on Queerty's 20 Most Frightful Anti-Gay Activists.
Jackson is a good friend of President George Bush and a prime opponent of the extending employment and hate crime protections to gays. Like many fellow black social conservatives, the Maryland minister shrouds his anti-gay message in the history of the civil rights struggle. A sample of pastor's non-linear wisdom:
"Historically when societies have gone off kilter, there has been rampant same-sex marriage. What tends to happen is that people tend to devalue the institution of marriage as a whole. People start rearing kids without two parents, and the black community already has this incredibly alarming and, if I may say, this shameful number of babies being born without fathers."
The blatantly evil Rev. Fred Phelps of Wichita's Westboro Baptist Church earns top honors as the nation's top anti-gay activist. New reports suggest Fred Phelps may have something in common with another Fred: Fred Thompson. Reportedly, Phelps has broken bread with the Republican presidential candidate, discussing scripture and the "gay lifestyle."
