Heath Ledger Found Dead

2008_01_22_ledger2

Popular actor Heath Ledger, the Academy Award-nominated co-star of Brokeback Mountain, was found dead earlier this afternoon in New York City. Police say the actor's "naked and unconscious" body was discovered by a housekeeper at the Broome Street apartment in SoHo. Reportedly, a masseuse arrived at the apartment for an appointment with Ledger and a housekeeper ...

[T]hen knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger naked and unconscious on a bed, with pills scattered around his body. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities.

Those pills were identified as sleeping pills. Although Ledger was reportedly in recovery from substance abuse, TMZ reports the NYPD believes the death was accidental. Earlier reports indicated the apartment may have been owned by actress Mary-Kate Olsen and that apparently is NOT correct.

Ledger is an Australian native and shot to stardom for his co-starring role in Brokeback Mountain, the epic love story and critically-acclaimed 2005 film. (Complete BMcoverage at Towleroad and After Elton.) The movie was based on a short story by Annie Proulx about two cowboys who fall in love.Ledger was nominated for an Academy Award and director Ang Lee received the award for Best Director.

Ledger met and became involved actress Michelle Williams while filming Brokeback Mountain. The couple became an item, moved to Brooklyn, had a daughter in 2005, and, separated last year. Heath Ledger was 28 years old.
