Thurmond

and you're going to be waiting a long time to hear black gays make a statement or get involved, Rod.

i live in the District and can tell you first hand there are thousands of black gay men here, with good jobs working for the federal government or the city. they will go to every club, every party and every soiree and are the last one s to get involved in gay rights issues in this majority black city.

maybe they will issue a "statement" after brunch today?

Saadiq

Nothing to see here! Just another black gay man killed by a homophobic straight guy who feared for his masculinity!

Keep moving!

A. Ronald

Well, I'm sure there would be a helluva lot more reaction if the story were about another semi-closeted Tyler Perry church queen.

Really sad that our black community is taught to despise gay men. This is so very sad and so very typical. But I am even more sadder this silly gay panic defense worked in DC.

nathans

sad that he got off so lightly
sad that this is not bigger news

sadder still that the black community is taking it in stride

most sad that the black gay community is apparently ok with it...

If a straight woamn pulls at a gay man does he have a right to kill her and claim straight Panic???

Osiris

Sigh.

Ravenback

@ nathans

Preach on. What if a gay man is verbally threatened and physically intimidated by a straight man, can he kill him and claim straight panic?

I guess a gay life is worth only 180 days. I'm not surprised about the lack of outrage within the black community. It all ties into what we have talked about during the past week about being closeted and DL gay men. People want the penis or the booty, but they don't stand up for their right to exist in peace. And gay pride events are no longer about being proud to be gay anymore. It's about sex parties, swimsuit competitions, and bedding as many gay men as possible. That's why I don't go to them anymore. I show my pride and support for the black gay community by volunteering at AIDS awareness clinics and gay pride outreach programs. So sad that we are aggressive in chasing that new piece of hot trade, yet are timid in screaming bloody murder when one of our own is attacked and/or killed. I don't have anymore tears to shed.

Ravenback

P.S.

I challenge all those folks who flooded the Terrell Carter thread defending Carter to come here and voice their opinions on this story. I guess this story isn't titillating enough for them.

Leimert Park

Ravenback, you would win that bet. The story isn't titillating enough and the closet queens and "it's my business" church queens don't check comments in stories like this.

SMDH

And in DC, too, and the only ones speaking out are the white gay activists. How DARE some of our own peeps talk about gay rights are "white" and gay racism when they can't stand up for their own.

FST

What Nahtans and Ravenback said.

And Rod go on with your bad self, I am lovimng this blog more and more daily.

Honut SInti

I completely agree with the previous comments.

TheRevKev

THIS IS A SHAME BEFORE GAME!

BOOOOOOO TO THE JUDGE AND THE SYSTEM THAT WOULD DARE MAKE SOMEONE, ANYONE'S LIFE, THIS TRIVIAL AND UNIMPORTANT! SEE, IF GAYS START TAKING IT TO THE STREETS, LITERALLY, AND PUTTING A HURTING ON SOME FOLKS, THEN THERE'D BE PROBLEMS!

I'M ABOUT TO TAKE MY COLLAR OFF AND WHOOP SOMEBODY'S (*&!

OKAY...I'VE VENTED!

Ravenback

@ The RevKev

You don't have to back off from your venting. We understand how you feel.

This case also brings up another issue. I'm all for hate crime laws. But what good are they when the DA and judge refuse to let those charges stick. In this case, the prosecutor backed away from anti-gay bias, and in another case, the judge dropped the hate crime charge. The police, prosecutors, and judges are going off on their own and choosing to ignore the written law.

Perhaps the gay community needs to invest in some self-defense classes. Because that seems the only way we can protect ourselves from viciousness and brutality. I think we have gotten to accustomed to the "Dog Bites Man" stories. After we bash some "straight" dudes heads in after bothering us, then maybe we'll start reading some "Man Bites Dog" storylines. Yeah, I know, I'm violent. But I would rather be violent and still alive rather than peaceful and dead.

180 days for a human life? Justice comes cheap when gays are involved, and interest runs low concerining issues that can actually impact our lives. Truly sad.

kayman

Honestly, this case has some major inconsistencies in involving what really happened. The fact that the story is one person's word against the other doesn't help. The US Attorney office failed epically on this investigation when obviously there were 4 against 2 in this fight. However, there is nothing anybody legally to change this case because of double jeopardy.

I hate to say this, but one just has been extremely aware of their surroundings in certain areas. I would have ever assumed that such a chump charge would be filed on such a brutal attack (regardless of the victims' sexualities). This was obvious that they were jumped without provocation, and the Justice System fails on recognizing this. For the record, he should have been charged as an adult.

We live in a screwed up world, where human life can be exchange for a few days in jail.

Jim

Rod asked: Six months in jail for killing a gay man in an unprovoked attack? Why not just give this teenaged killer probation and a cookie if he swears to be a good little boy and not kill any more homos?

Rod, I think you have it backwards. He gets a cookie every time he kills another homo.

At the very least, he is rewarded with a special place in the Pentecostals' heaven.

Anthony in Nashville

This is more of the same. Gay man get attacked or killed, the perpetrator gets off with a slight penalty, and black gays have no comment.

We've seen this over and over. It's obvious many of us have a lot of work to do on our self-esteem and priorities before we can get serious about taking care of ourselves.

As long as we don't make our voices heard, we are in fact behaving like the "punks" homophobes consider us to be.

Baltimore Femme

@kayman: you can be aware of your surroundings and still get hurt. when four men jump one person, not much you can do.

this story is a travesty on so many levels. everything from the punkish four on two fight to the gay panic defense, its all cowardly. and then to get a sentence like this? this is bull you know what.

but let me cosign everything that has been said. DC's black gay community was much too busy this week preparing for the white attire party, that took all of their concentration. but as rod pointed out, they never made any noise on this anyway.

i cosign what ravenback and nahtans said: where pray tell are the dozens of closet queens who come out the woodwork to defend church butch queen terrell carter and their own glass closets and have nothing to say when blood is spilled?

i am amazed and ethralled by this blog and many of the comments. at other times, the self hatred so sad it makes me speechless.

Kevjack

This tells us not only about how little our lives are valued by the government, but also how little we value our own. It shows in so many ways-- the fact that we support hate-filled institutions, our reluctance to come out in our own community, our lack of political engagement, and (some) of us defending (to our deaths) the ability to live "private" lives. If we don't value our lives other get their marching orders-- we can be messed with and disposed of.

Well, it has consequences. When we live in the closet, defend the closet, lock the closet door, worship the closet (by loving DL/married men and hating all things "obviously" gay) and tell people who would have us to live open, vibrant lives to "shut up" and "mind their own business" we contribute to the belief that we are not worthy of protection, not worthy of representation, and not worthy to be alive. I wish more people would see the connection between the two.

mjolnir202

I heard this decision on the local NPR station while driving this Friday and was in shock. The only people who are making any noise about this are White Gays. DC Black Gay Men are so firmly in the closet and are so ferocious in defending it that they could turn back a Taliban insurgency. It's pathetic. They will not come near anything 'Gay'. Just check out Adam4Adam and see how they so proudly celebrate their cowardess like it's bravery.

Am I the only who thinks Hanna looks HORRIBLE? Hopefully he will continue to rot away in jail. The guilt has already begun the process.
