Later tonight, Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd is expected to announce he will not run for re-election and will retire at the end of his term. TPM: "While usually a retirement by an incumbent is bad news for a party, in this case Dodd's retirement almost certainly improves Democratic chances for holding the seat with a stronger candidate. Dodd himself had consistently been running badly in the polls against his Republican challengers, largely as a result of the controversial mortgage he received from Countrywide Financial."
CT Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has already announced that he will run. Public Policy Polling has just released a new poll that shows Blumenthal way ahead of Dodd and any Republican challenger.
Dodd's news comes on the same day fellow Democratic Sen. Byron L. Dorgan (ND) and Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, also a Democrat, announced they would not seek reelection.
It was time for Dodd to go. I'm surprised he's going though. Barring some hookers or rentboys falling out of the woodwork, Blumenthal is a shoe-in. He's a complete media whore and looooovvess seeing himself on tv, but he's been a very effective attorney general and is very liberal, not to mention, the most well-known politician in CT. Everyone knows him and most people like him.
