In late January, Rod 2.0 reported on Mona Noriega, the veteran Chicago Latina lesbian activist who is being considered for a Chicago City Council post that will soon be vacated. If appointed, Noriega would become Chicago's first openly lesbian alderman.
The Windy City Times reports an update. "I submitted a letter of intent and a resume two weeks ago and [ Feb. 9 ]was interviewed in the city's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs," Noriega wrote in a letter to supporters. "I discussed my experience, issues facing the ward, why I feel I would be the best representative, and the intense public scrutiny that public officials must live with. Mayor Daley has 60 days in which to make the appointment, but it will be weeks before I will hear anything."
Noriega has worked on LGBT and Latina issues since the late 1970s. She co-founded the Lambda Legal Midwest Office and later co-founded Amigas Latinas, the prominent Chicago-based Latina lesbian group. Noriega is an honoree of the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame.
There are reportedly up to 14 people seeking to replace the outgoing First Ward alderman. They would have to run for re-election in 2011 along with the 49 other city aldermen.
