Bird alone, flying high
Flying through a clouded sky
Sending mournful soulful sounds
Soaring over troubled grounds

Bird alone with no mate
Turning corners tempting fate
Flying circles in the air
Are you on your way somewhere?

Gliding, soaring on the wind
You're a sight of glory
Flying way up there so high
Wonder what's your story

Bird alone, flying low
Over where the grasses grow
Swingin' low, then out of sight
You'll be singing in the night

Gliding, soaring on the wind
You're a sight of glory
Flying way up there so high
Wonder what's your story

Bird alone, flying low
Over where the grasses grow
Swingin' low, then out of sight
You'll be singing in the night

R.I.P, sweet Abbey.

Thank you, Rod, for reporting this! I have yet to hear or read of Ms. Lincoln's death anywhere else!

Don Maggin's forthcoming bio of Max Roach will have more about the Max-Abbey relationship and vicissitudes.

I remember enthusing to a friend online about the
powerfully beautiful (to me) recording of Cole Porter's) ..." 'I'm in Love,' with Abbey Lincoln." Riposte from my friend: "Oh, yeah, man! Me too!"

Distant Lover

A truly classy lady! We have lost a tremendous talent!

Derrick from Philly

I remember her in the mid-1960s film "Nothin' But A Man" (a very good movie about black folks on a very low budget). In it she starred with Ivan Dixon and the great Gloria Foster. She was beautiful and always dignified.

BLACK

RIP angel. Is it me or does she look like Regina King. I hope she play her in a movie of some sorts.

Luda

A memorial website was created for Abbey Lincoln. Honor her memory by contributing to her memorial site http://abbeylincoln.people2remember.com/

William

This is the first time I've heard her sing Throw It Away. What a beautiful, haunting song. Love you Abbey.
