San Francisco Bay Area rapper Brandon "Lil B" McCartney became a trending topic earlier this year after releasing his newest album I’m Gay (I’m Happy). The title provoked death threats and homophobic slurs from some angered fans. And now the first track from his BasedGod Velli mixtape: An HIV/AIDS awareness track entitled "I Got AIDS".
Lil B tells MTV News:
"A lot of guys think it’s cool to have sex with a lot of women. I’m not having sex with all these women. I lie about it a lot; I lie about having sex with 40 girls. I’m not doing that, and I want people to know, if you are doing that, you are at high risk of getting AIDS or other STDs and you need to make sure you get tested. This is me paying back to the world and just being truthful, honest, and doing something that I feel is right.”
Lil B's impromptu HIV/AIDS activism has earned the respect of respect of HIV Plus. "The song is a '90s style throwback —think Tupac meets TLC—but the message is straightforward, refreshingly non-homophobic, and sure to hit at the heart of young hip hop listeners who are among those most likely to get diagnosed with Hiv this year."
Lil B also writes a personal message to his fans about HIV testing. Listen to the track and read the message WHEN YOU JUMP ...
