CRATES: VOLUME 1 dropped this week and it's a winner. The centerpiece of the 11-track CRATES: VOLUME 1 is "Spring Summer Feeling" remixed by Chicago producer Ron Trent. It's a lush, ten minute remix of Jill's classic. The track is an homage to the "deep" House music sound that was omnipresent in Chicago in the 1980s and 1990s. The reverbs, deep percussion and soaring vocals are a tribute to Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy—and the epic parties at Body & Soul NYC and Club Shelter. The beats capture that perfect summer feeling.
One of the other standout tracks on CRATES: VOLUME 1 is the Jazzy Jeff Redux of "A Long Walk." DJ Jazzy Jeff, the architect of Scott’s multi-platinum debut Who Is Jill Scott?, was the only producer on the project that worked directly with Ms. Scott. Jeff's remix is luxe and funky, almost a throwback to the 1970s.
Not all of the remixes are "house" music-inspired. Ca$e Boogie's remix of "Can't Explain" is an upbeat, high-energy remix. It's a totally new sound for Jill Scott—very circuit and very White Party. Steve "Mr. Mig" Migliore also created a circuit-ready anthem in his remix of "Whatever". The bassline is deep, the energy is high and the vocals are crisp. The only thing missing from both of these remixes—the shirtless guys and the bottled water.
Only one of the remixes in CRATES: VOLUME 1 possibly does not deliver their potential—the remix of "Bedda At Home" was not one of my favorites—but that's par for the course in any such collection. But the upside: This is a great way to start your summer dance music collection. Deep house, jazzy funk, high-energy ... there is probably something fabulous here for everyone.
CRATES: VOLUME 1 includes 11 new remixes and gorgeous liner notes. Rod 2.0 readers can win a free copy thanks to Hidden Beach and marketing guru Thornell Jones. Answer one question: Which Jill Scott track always makes you dance?
