Very nice. JET magazine featured the wedding of Dr. Ravi Perry and Paris Prince in its December 10 issue. Perry and Prince appeared on MSNBC last week to discuss that historic moment in the 61-year-old magazine's history and other current events. The conversation with Thomas Roberts also included the recent Supreme Court announcement that it would rule on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act.
Watch AFTER THE JUMP ...
"The Supreme Court has had a history of equality cases before its docket and they’ve sometimes erred on the side of caution and has embarrassed the country such as the Dred Scott decision," said Dr. Ravi Perry, referring to the infamous 1857 case which found that African Americans had no claims to freedom or citizenship. "But they’ve also done the right thing when it comes to equality. So we’re hopeful they’ll do the right thing again with the marriage equality cases that they’ve taken up ... and also with the Voting Rights Act and affirmative action."
Last year, JET featured its first same-sex wedding, telling the amazing story of Nyema Vernon and Dr. Tenika Jackson. Perry and Prince are the first married gay male couple to be featured in the magazine.
Rod 2.0 readers will recall the 29-year-old Perry made history in March 2011 when was elected president of the NAACP chapter of Worcester, Massachusetts. At that time, Perry was a political science professor at Clark University. Perry is now a professor of political science at Mississippi State University.
Roberts also asked Perry and Prince for their take on images of Black masculinity—very timely given the homophobic backlash over so-called "Kappa Wedding" video and Perry's response in EBONY.
