Now for something completely different: Bruno Mars debuted a smooth, upbeat and entirely improvised cover of Janet Jackson's 1993 hit "That's the Way Love Goes" on December 29th at The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas. Bruno has covered Michael Jackson songs previously and performed two of them in Vegas—"Billie Jean" and "Dirty Diana"—but this is the very first time he has covered Janet.
It's a clever and cute arrangement ... and I love the significance of a male pop star covering a dance hit by a female pop icon. Watch the performance AFTER THE JUMP ...
The Grammy Award-winning pop singer will deliver the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show in February. Bruno Mars was also named Billboard's "Artist of the Year" in mid-December.
The Hollywood Reporter reviewed Mars' set at The Chelsea:
Bruno Mars is in the middle of a milestone moment. Not many Grammy-nominated, Super Bowl halftime headliners would spend their time off from a sold-out North American arena tour to christen a new venue in Las Vegas and perform for a relatively small crowd of 3,000 people -- Mars' first of eight shows at the space throughout 2014. Yet the rare opportunity turned into a rich, refreshing spectacle, as Mars stretched his improv chops for an intimate audience that became acquainted with his vocal precision, sense of humor and longtime friends.
