There are new developments in the horrific murders of Crystal Jackson and her girlfriend Britney Cosby. The bodies of the Houston couple were discovered behind a convenience store dumpster in nearby Port Bolivar on March 7.
Detectives suspect that Britney Cosby's father killed his daughter and her girlfriend in the house that he shared with them. Police suspect that James Larry Cosby had an accomplice and are continuing to build a case, reports the Dallas Voice.
A search of the home revealed blood all over Cosby’s living area, which is a converted garage. [Houston Police Department] Captain Barry Cook said Cosby’s fingerprint was found on a piece of evidence as well. Cook said he’d had a “violent episode” and argued with his daughter and Jackson on March 6, the day before the couple’s bodies were found. That evening the couple’s silver 2006 Kia Sorrento was seen leaving the home and boarding a ferry in Galveston.
The vehicle never boarded the ferry again. Cook said authorities believe Cosby killed the women and used the car to transport their bodies to Port Bolivar. The couple’s Kia Sorrento [is] still missing, as is the gun that killed Jackson, Cook said. Authorities also think Cosby had help moving the bodies because video surveillance shows a man of a different height and build than Cosby.
Cosby is accused of tampering with evidence, "specifically tampering with human corpses," reports CBS Houston. Authorities expect to upgrade the charges to capital murder in several weeks.
Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson were both 24-years-old and raising a child together. Britney Cosby's mother, Loranda Remer, told the Houston Chronicle that the father had difficulty accepting his daughter's sexuality. "'He would throw it in her face,' Remer said, adding that her daughter quoted Larry Cosby as saying, 'Don't throw that gay (expletive) around in this house.'"
James Cosby served ten years in prison for sexual assault and another two years for failing to register as a sex offender, reports FOX Houston. It's tragic and ironic that he apparently believed that the "lifestyle" of a rapist and sex offender was "okay" ... but two women in love and raising a child together was "wrong."
The Cosby/Jackson slayings also illustrate the continuation of an unfortunate national trend: LGBT people of color are disproportionately the victims of violent crimes and homicide. The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs most recent report "Hate Violence Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) and HIV-Affected Communities in the United States in 2012" documented 25 anti-LGBT homicides in 2012. Three-fourths of all anti-LGBT homicide victims in 2012 were people of color.
This story is just heartbreaking on so many levels. My thoughts and prayers to the families.
