WATCH: Poet Yolo Akili Asks, "Are You the Kind of Man You Want?"

Poet and performance artist Yolo Akili sparks a provocative dialogue on masculinity and sexual attraction in his new video "Are We the Kind of Boys We Want?"

The film is a video installation of Akili's spoken word poem "We R Not the Kind of Boy’s We Want"—listen on iTunes—and includes a montage of interviews with Black gay men about masculinity, desire and attraction.

"I wrote this poem in college after realizing that me and my friends, who would definitely be considered 'feminine', not only never liked boys like us, but often seemed disgusted at them," Akili tells Darian Aaron. "I began to wonder what it meant when a reflection of you walks by and you are repulsed.

The video includes interviews with young men who say they are attracted to "masculine" men ... and many say they would never be attracted to themself. Part of a much-needed, larger conversation on the focus on hyper-masculinity in the Black and Black LGBT/SGL communities.

The video includes performance by Atlanta activists Michael Brewer, Anthony Antoine, Darian Aaron and out artist Anye Elite.  Watch it AFTER THE JUMP ....
