WATCH: Tyson Gay Runs 2nd Fastest Men's 100 Meters in History

Tyson Gay makes history at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. The American sprinter runs the second fastest men's 100 meters on record.

Gay's 9.69 seconds matched Usain Bolt's world record and winning time in last year's final at the Beijing Olympics. The Jamaican eclipsed the mark with 9.58 in the 100m at last month's World Championships in Berlin. Gay won silver in that race.

Also in Shanghai: Jamaica's Asafa Powell was second and American Darvis Patton won bronze. Watch, WHEN YOU JUMP.

Jamaican Usain Bolt shattered the 100m world record at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin. Bolt ran a stunning 9.58secs to claim gold as the defending champion Tyson Gay was left trailing in his wake. Bolt set his initial record of 9.69 at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and now adds the world title to his triple Olympic crown

Tyson Gay's run of 9.71 was a new U.S. record. Unfortunately it was only good enough for silver. Jamaica's Asafa Powell claimed bronze in 9.84. Berlin 2009: Asafa Powell Barely Qualifies for 100M, Aziz Ouhadi 4th

While Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay breezed through their qualifiers for the 100 meter competition at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Jamaican Asafa Powell barely qualified.

Powell, the former world record holder, "showed no signs of being the experienced runner he is when he eased down well beyond the finishing line, after getting a super start and just did enough to get the third spot in 10.38," reports World Track.

Powell's sloppy performance was particularly troublesome because earlier this week he was threatened with expulsion from the team after skipping training. Reuters adds: "Powell [had] to anxiously wait before a collective sigh of relief swept through the Olympic stadium with results confirming his spot in the next round."

Asafa Powell on Track for Doha and Reebok Grand Prix

Good news for fans of Jamaican track and field. Despite having problems in the Penn Relays last weekend, Olympic gold medalist Asafa Powell will compete in the next two big track and field circuit events.

The Jamaican Observer reports Powell will honor his commitment to the Qatar Super Grand Prix in Doha on May 8. Powell has also signed on to the Reebok Grand Prix May 30 in New York City: "This follows the former World 100m recordholder limping off the track after anchoring the Jamaica men's 4x100m relay team at the 115th Penn Relays last Saturday. Paul Doyle, Powell's agent, played down the injury, after the big sprinter jogged to the finish line in obvious discomfort."

The Jamaican track star, well known for his bulging muscles on the track, anchored the Jamaican 4x100m relay team to a world record 37.10 seconds in Beijing.

Olympic Gold Medalist Asafa Powell Soon Bulging in HDTV

Everything looks larger in HDTV. Super talented and super sexy Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell—the former 100m world record holder and Olympic relay gold medalist—will once again prominently bulge on a large screen television near you.

Powell will run a 400m race at the national stadium in Kingston on January 31. Since there has been so much interest in the Jamaican sprinters since their dominance in the Olympics, the American television broadcast and cable networks will be there.

The 400-m was won last year by Usain Bolt, who also went on to break Powell`s record and secure three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics.

Asafa Powell is certainly fit in all the right places ...

Instead of concentrating on the fierce Jamaican sprinter's skills on the track, most of the shots pay more attention to his, err, bouncing assets. Outrageous, right? Morning Sports

Let's start the morning by scanning the sports pages.

Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell has tied his 100 meter record. At the British Grand Prix, Asafa—yes, we're close like that—ran 9.77 seconds to equal the world record he holds with Justin Gatlin. Afterwards, Powell displayed his trademark Colgate smile and bravado: "That's how you run a world record. As I said, I can run as fast as I want, when I want."

Yep, Powell is certainly packin' some heat.

The co-world record-holders will meet on July 28 to race the 100m at the London Grand Prix. "I don't know what (the record) is going to be, but it's going to be a lot faster than that," Powell promises. "This year I'm feeling a lot stronger, and that means I'm faster, so there's no doubting it." Hmm. Let's hope that papi slows down for at least some things.

Turning to hoops:

If you're wondering what Boris Diaw sounds like, well, you can rest assured that he has just the most incredible Gallic accent. But then again, any French accent is sexy, no? Listen to Boris talk and watch him change (several times!) in the Phoenix locker room in this 17 minute "day-in-the-life" type documentary from Canal Television, which, we should warn you, is almost entirely en francais. The quality isn't the best but who cares.

Lastly, soccer:

Okay, after yesterday's disastrous reality Czech, some of us are ready to hang Team USA. But the boys still have another chance and will play Italy on Saturday. Hopefully the Italians will be pre-occupied trying to keep the stains off their cute lil Dolce & Gabbana-designed uniforms.

Even though the team was crucified lost, Rod 2.0 faves Oguchi Onyewu and Eddie Pope managed to foul Czech's superman-striker Jan Koller in the first two minutes. The head of US Soccer has some great insight on the game and strong reviews of the Gooch and Eddie in his briefing to reporters. (Podcast) By the way, that Czech victory comes at a high price beacuse Koller must now have thigh surgery and will be out for at least one game. Speaking of thighs, Eddie still has 'em:

Fastest in the World

On Tuesday Asafa Powell set a new world's record in Athens—the 100m in 9.77s. Yesterday the Jamaican sprinter arrived to a hero's welcome when he returned to his homeland. Is he impressed with his record? "I think it can be lowered." We love track stars—the legs, lycra suits and everything underneath—but hope they're not so fast behind closed doors.
