PHOTOS: Approaching Addis Ababa

The view approaching Mount Entoto (Amharic: እንጦጦ), the highest peak overlooking Addis Ababa. Ethiopia's capital city is the third highest capital city in the world and sits at an altitude of 8300 feet.

A bit of history: Mount Entoto is a historical and cultural symbol in Ethiopia. This is where Menelik II built his palace. The mountain is also home to many monasteries.

Even more imposing are the majestic peaks of the Ethiopian Highlands on the Ethiopian/Eritrean border. Many of the peaks rise above the clouds and are taller than 15,000 feet.

It's going to take a few days to adjust to the high elevation and the time change, which is eight hours ahead of the US East Coast. But I'm doing well so far imo.

PHOTOS: 747 and Exhaust Contrails

For some science slash aviation porn: Lensed a few images on Monday of the jet engine exhaust contrails from a 747. These are plumes of condensed water vapour crystallized by the extreme cold. It usually can be seen above 25,000 feet.

The images are lensed with a Canon SX30 in a modified AIRPLANE setting in AUTO. The focal length is 878mm.

The plane was traveling very fast and the contrails quickly dissipated. Obviously it's very difficult to get a clear and focused still image of an airplane at that height but here ya go. Not bad for 20-something thousand feet.
