The Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation are now "monitoring" the disturbing and bizarre case of Chavis Carter, reports the Huffington Post and The Guardian. Police in Jonesboro, Arkansas claim the 21-year-old Mississippi man shot himself in the head ... while he was handcuffed in the back of a police car.
The investigation comes amid lingering questions over who pulled the trigger. Police said he committed suicide with a gun officers failed to find when they searched him. His family members said they believe he was killed by police who are attempting to cover it up.
Carter suffered a single, fatal gunshot wound to the head. He was detained on Saturday night following a traffic stop in Jonesboro, about 2 1/2 hours north of Little Rock, after officers said they found marijuana and empty baggies. Officers searched him twice, handcuffed him and placed him in the back of a police car, police said. Not long after, police said, he was found slumped over, with his head in his lap and a gunshot wound to the head.
The alleged suicide would have been very difficult. "Questions have also been raised as to how the left-handed Carter was able to deliver a fatal shot to his right temple while in restraints, as it has been claimed," adds The Guardian.
The FBI confirmed to the Guardian that local police had shared "investigative information" relating to the incident and that federal agents would "monitor and assess the situation". Jonesboro police chief Michael Yates has reportedly said that the incident "defies logic at first" but that footage from a dashboard video camera and witness statements do seem to back up the officers' account.
Black leaders in Jonesboro also attest to Yates ignoring calls to increase diversity within the police force. ... The Jonesboro police department has confirmed to theGrio that of the 149 officers on the force, only three are African-American. Jonesboro has about 68,000 residents. Census data shows ... as of 2010, the city’s Black population was 18.4 percent of the total. ... There are no Latino members of the force.
Just a left handed Black man who fatally shot himself in the right temple while handcuffed, according to the virtually all-white police force. Nothing to see here, keep moving!
