R20 friend Clarence J. Fluker, who served as the No. 2 at the D.C. Office of GLBT Affairs under former Mayor Adrian Fenty, could be under consideration to run the office, a "source familiar with the selection process" tells Lou Chibbaro Jr. at the Washington Blade.
[Christopher Dyer] left his post as director of the GLBT Affairs Office Dec. 30 after Mayor Vincent Gray informed him that he would appoint a new director of the office. The City Council created the office through legislation making it a cabinet-level agency in the city government.
Fluker said he remains in his post as the office’s program director. He declined to comment on whether he’s under consideration for the director’s position, saying all inquires about personnel matters must be directed to the mayor’s press office. A press spokesperson did not respond to an inquiry about the matter by press time.
Last month, sources familiar with Gray’s mayoral transition team said at least three others were believed to be under consideration for the director’s position at the GLBT Affairs Office. Among them were Jeffrey Richardson, president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club; Christopher Fitzgerald, head of Gray Pride, the LGBT arm of the Gray for mayor campaign last year; and Sterling Washington, former president of the D.C. Coalition of Black Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual & Transgender Men & Women. Gray has not said when he plans to name the new director of the office.
Clarence would make a terrific LGBT liaison for Mayor Gray. He has contacts across the District and is on a first-name basis with everyone from ball children in Anacostia to Capitol Hill senior staffers.
Former D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray ousted Fenty last fall. Fenty and Gray both had outstanding records on LGBT rights ... but a number of the District's more vocal LGBT activists criticized Fenty's aloof style and the priorities of the GLBT Affairs Office.
