WATCH: Tyson Gay Runs 2nd Fastest Men's 100 Meters in History

Tyson Gay makes history at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. The American sprinter runs the second fastest men's 100 meters on record.

Gay's 9.69 seconds matched Usain Bolt's world record and winning time in last year's final at the Beijing Olympics. The Jamaican eclipsed the mark with 9.58 in the 100m at last month's World Championships in Berlin. Gay won silver in that race.

Berlin 2009: Bolt and Gay Breeze Into Second 100M Round

Track and field lovers are stuck to their televisions and TiVos because today is the opening day of the World Athletics Championships in Berlin. All eyes are on triple Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt and 100 meters world champion Tyson Gay, whose anticipated world championship showdown is "seen as the biggest event of the nine-day championships", the AP reports.

The Jamaican Bolt donned new bright orange spikes clocked a comfortable 10.20 seconds. Tyson Gay, the American champ, ran the fastest time in the heats with 10.16 despite a minor groin injury. Gay told reporters: The injury "is a little sore. I did not want to use so much energy. I wanted to play it safe."

Other heat winners included Jamaica’s Michael Frater and Americans Mike Rogers and Darvis Patton.

My, what an impressive baton you have there. Shawn Crawford on the left and Darvis Patton on the right, both looking mighty fit, at the Penn Relays. Many of the nation's—and the world's—best track and field athletes were at the 115the Penn  Relays at the University of Pennsylvania over the weekend.

USA swept the men’s and women’s 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays, going a long ways toward erasing the embarrassment and disappointment of the Beijing Olympics where both teams dropped the baton.
