This has been a great week for Dwight Howard, the center and power forward for the Orlando Magic. Howard leads the NBA in rebounds, blocked shots and double-doubles and becomes the first player to get 3 million votes from fans in the NBA All Star Team.
The secrets to his success? While he's at the free throw line, the strapping 6'11, 265 pound baller—and that's a whole lotta man—pumps himself up by singing Beyonce songs. The basketball phenom discusses his song choices on ESPN’s "Pardon the Interruption."
"Ya’ all heard about that? Oh, that was supposed to be a
secret!" Howard said. "Like when I’m at the free throw line I try to
keep my mind off everything and I might just up there and start singing
like …"
(singing) ‘I’m a single lady, I’m a single lady’ … And
sometimes I might make it! It happens. I get up there and I might sing
Beyonce. I don’t know why, out of all the artists, I’m supposed to be
like, (makes menacing noises), like Jay-Z, or Kanye or Lil Wayne, or
someone towards those lines, but I’m singing Beyonce … If I have to
sing Beyonce to make a couple of free throws, I’m gonna keep doing it."
No shame in his game. It's nice how Dwight Howard takes the teasing well and explains his music choices and his individuality help his game.
Look for Dwight Howard to channel more Beyonce in the weeks ahead. The Orlando Magic center got a record 3,150,181 votes to lead this
season's All-Star team. The Feb. 15 game in Phoenix will mark the third All-Star trip for Howard, who will be starting for the second time. Come to think of it, it would be fun to see Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant singing and J-setting at the free throw line in Phoenix.
