San Francisco 49ers cornerback Eric Green sexually assaulted a transgender New York City woman, according to a $10 million lawsuit just filed in Florida. The New York Daily News reports Angelina Mavilia—who in a separate legal action is also suing New York City and the New York Police Department claiming humiliation and police brutality—says Green "forcibly sodomized" her.
The two met in a Scottsdale, Ariz., casino in early 2009 when Green still played for the Arizona Cardinals, the 38-year-old East Side woman says in papers filed in federal court. They went back to his condo, where Green, 27, assaulted her, she charges. He then got "extremely agitated and threatening," according to court documents, and warned: "This never happened. You'd better not tell."
In the local case, Mavilia says she was dehumanized after being arrested for trespassing in a Manhattan housing complex on Oct. 30, 2008. A female cop twice demanded she take off her bra and panties and then peered at her genitals, according to court papers filed in Manhattan Federal Court. "It's a girl!" the cop is claimed to have yelled. At Manhattan Central Booking, a correction officer ordered Mavilia to strip yet again and put her in a cell with a man. "You're not fooling me; I know you were not born a woman," the officer allegedly mocked. "I can see your plastic surgery."
The suit also alleges Green beat the woman. The homophobic and transphobic comments are rampant and without moderation at the Daily News, btw.
Green was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He signed with the 49ers in August 2009.
This would not be the first recent accusation of transphobic violence by NYPD officers. Amnesty International calls attention to several police brutality cases lodged by Latina and Black transgender women, such as 2006 Mariah Lopez case, where she claimed unnecessary strip searches and brutal treatment. The next year transgender Christina Sforza filed a similar police brutality case.
