Oraine Barrett Becomes First Black Model to Cover Brazil's "DOM"

Jamaican-born supermodel-to-be and Rod 2.0 fave Oraine Barrett becomes the first black model to cover Revista DOM, the Brazilian homostyle glossy. The photography in the June issue is by Gregory Vaughan and the styling is Made in Brazil.

Not everyone at Made in Brazil is pleased with the cover—some do not like Oraine and others believe the magazine waited too long to debut a black cover model. The blogger and fashion stylist disagrees: "Oraine may be the first black model on the cover, but DOM has included black or ethnic models in most of its issues since it launched a year and a half ago. The magazine has already featured model portfolios on different ethnic backgrounds, and published a story with Asian-Brazilian models last month. Leandro Okabe, of Asian descent, has posed for the cover of the magazine a year ago."

It's certainly a by-product of the Obama era that the fashion industry's catch phrase "All-American"—once considered exclusively to mean "blonde and blue"—now can include African American, West Indian and African models. Congratulations to DOM for picking Oraine Barrett as cover model for the June Gay Pride edition. That's a strong statement. Oh and congrats to Oraine for racking up yet another cover.
