Since NBC recently announced the cancellation of Passions, the supernatural sudser's unresolved love triangles have become even more ridiculous—most lately with the addition of a "down-low" storyline for Chad (Charles Divins). Last week saw Chad at the no-tell motel with an unidentified male lover, drinking up some liquid courage—a fifth of Jack Daniels—as a box of condoms languished on the night stand. Uh-oh. Here we go again ....
A black gay or "down-low" storyline could be effectively rendered on daytime television—only not on Passions. First, Chad Divins is easy on the eyes, but he's the third and least accomplished actor to portray his character. (Jason Olive played gay wonderfully in "PUNKS" and the fabulous Donn Swaby could be very convincing in this role.) Second, the soap has flirted with story lines around homosexuality—discussed HERE—abortion, drug abuse, prostitution and incest, all with no success. In the latter case, Chad's character pursued his own sister Whitney, set up house with her, and, raised a baby. Only years later did we learn that maybe Chad was not related to Whitney.
Third and finally, given this history, especially with Chad's character, there is no incentive to believe the story arc will be fair and not careen into the familiar, Oprah-JL King-Terry McMillan histrionics about black men on the "down-low" and HIV. The only upside here: It looks like Chad's lover could be Vincent, the cutie with the curly afro portrayed by Phillip Jeanmarie. Yet another gayish character for a veteran on the Power Rangers.
