Zurich 2009: LaShawn Merritt Glides to Gold in the 400M

Another week and another gold medal for LaShawn Merritt. The LaShawn hotness glided across the 400 meter finish line in 44:06 and picked up another at gold medal at the IAAF Golden League in Zurich, Switzerland.

Merrit boasts a 12-month unbeaten 400m record. In the last year he won both the Olympic and World titles. The Zurich finish line was the same as Berlin: Merritt won gold, rival Jeremy Wariner got the silver ... and Trini sprinter Renny Quow once again bulged with bronze. Oh and more tongue action, too.

Berlin 2009: Americans Top Gold and Medal Count, Sweep 4x400s

Team USA closes the World Athletic Championships in Berlin at the top of the medal count and a sweep of the men's and women's 4x400 meter relays. LaShawn Merritt (400m) and Kerron Clement (400m hurdles)—both seen above—Allyson Felix and Sanya Richards each won a second gold medal Sunday. Olympic gold medalist Angelo Taylor also won gold.

The United States has 10 gold medals and 22 overall. Jamaica was second with seven gold and 13 overall. Russia also boasts 13 overall.

Team USA's performance at the 4x400 relays was a marked improvement over the incredible disappointments at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, when the two sprint relay teams clumsily dropped the baton. Jeremy Wariner, who won silver in the 400m and seen below passing the baton to Clement: "We expect greatness. That's what we did today. We showed greatness."

Is that a bronze medal in your singlet?

All eyes may have been on LaShawn Merritt at the 400 meter competition at the World Athletic Championships in Berlin. But it was hard to ignore 22-year-old Renny Quow of Trinidad and Tobago, who clocked 45.02 and won the bronze. Oh and caused quite a sensation on the track.

Berlin 2009: Team USA's LaShawn Merritt Wins 400M Gold

LaShawn Merritt, the Olympic 400 meter gold medalist, literally floats over the finish line as he collects gold at the World Athletic Championships in Berlin. The 23-year-old easily dispatched rival and twice world champion Jeremy Wariner "with a powerful finish to grab the only major title missing from his collection in a time of 44.06 seconds," notes Reuters.

No love lost between Merritt and Wariner, who helped Team USA win the 4x400 relay gold in Beijing. They will team up again for the relays on Sunday.
