Five LGBT activists have been arrested after a sit-in at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Capitol Hill offices. The activists were part of a bi-coastal sit-in at Pelosi's San Francisco and Washington D.C. offices to demand the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)n be brought to the House floor for a vote by the end of March.
The activists were part of Robin McGehee and Kip Williams newly-organized GetEqual.org, who organized today's White House civil disobedience featuring Lt. Dan Choi. The arrests came about four hours after arriving at Speaker Pelosi's office for a pre-scheduled meeting with staff to discuss ENDA, reports DC Agenda. The activists locked the doors and live-Tweeted from the sit-in with hashtags #getenda and #getequal.
DC Agenda reports: "Before they were arrested, the activists in Pelosi’s office read aloud the list of ENDA’s legislative sponsors and chanted, 'Equal rights now! ENDA starts here!\' As U.S. Capitol Police officers led the protestors away in handcuffs, shouts of 'Get equal' and 'It’s all about ENDA' were heard."
Three or four activists were also reportedly arrested at Pelosi's San Francisco office. It is unknown what charges the DC activists face but they are apparently being taken to DC Central Cellblock, where Choi is being held without bail. Watch video of the San Francisco activists AFTER THE JUMP ...
