Did San Diego WR Demetrius Byrd's "Gay Bieber" Tweet" Get Him Cut?

After the San Diego Chargers cut wide receiver Demetrius Byrd on Monday, the Huffington Post reported the team has previously fined players for comments made on the über-popular social network Twitter. HuffPo suggests Byrd's release was partially due to a "gay" Tweet about 16-year-old YouTube phenom Justin Bieber.

The Huffington Post:  "In follow-up tweets after his release, Byrd denied any connection. He first wrote, 'TO ALL U PPL WHO THINK I GOT CUT CUZ OF THAT TWEET FUCK YALL I'M PISSED.....THANKS TO U NO DATS DUMB.' He later added a longer message, saying that people 'need to get a life' and thanking San Diego Chargers GM for drafting him in 2009: 

"Just read this thing about me b n cut cuz I tweeted sumthin bout likin Justin Bieber I dnt like fool like dat I dnt swing that way I was talkin bout dat new song wit ludacris. But ppl need to get a life lol that's why San Diego cut lol C'Mon Son ppl a trip now u ppl run and quote this from me thanks AJ 4 drafted me makin my dream come to tru in a comma last draft wow but dat tweet I just asked my followers wat they think ppl can't ask shit wow God Bless Haters"

Byrd was seriously injured after a car accident last year and spent his first NFL season on the bench. He plans to return to Louisiana State University to finish his last few credits to graduate.

Byrd continues to Tweet about his dismissal and jokes that he is still playing "Justin Bieber dis 4 da haters since he got me released lmao haha."

During the 2009 season, the Kansas City Chiefs cut controversial running back Larry Johnson after a Twitter meltdown where he called fans "fag", "faggot" and "Christopher Street boy". Johnson later ended up on the Bengals and more recently signed a contract with the Redskins.

Updating our earlier story: The Kansas City Chiefs have released controversial running back Larry Johnson on the same day he returned to the team after a two week suspension.

The move comes after Johnson belittled Coach Todd Haley in a Twitter meltdown where he called fans "fag", "faggot" and "Christopher Street boy", in addition to using gay slurs with reporters. Johnson was fined a $315,000 penalty for the incident. New reports indicate the NFL suggested no suspension and only a $10,000 penalty .

The two-time Pro Bowler Johnson was second on the team's all-time rushing list with 6,090 yards. After several violent episodes with women, numerous run-ins with Chiefs management and the gay baiting Twitter rant, more than 10,000 Kansas City fans petitioned the team not to allow Johnson to gain the 75 yards needed break the team's all-time rushing record. The fans and decency won. Maybe Larry Johnson can ask Tim Hardaway for career advice?

NFL Wanted NO Suspension and Only $10,000 Fine for Johnson

Running back Larry Johnson was not in uniform Sunday for the Kansas City Chiefs 24-21 loss to Jacksonville. Johnson returns to the team roster today after a two week suspension and $315,000 penalty for publicly making three homophobic slurs in a 24-hour period. But the NFL suggested the Chiefs not suspend Johnson and fine him only $10,000, reports Nancy Gay at AOL Fanhouse.

That was the punishment doled out by the NFL to then-Steelers linebacker Joey Porter in December 2006, when he twice called Browns tight end Kellen Winslow a "f**" following a Pittsburgh victory over Cleveland. At the time, an NFL spokesman said Porter was fined for "his vulgar and inexcusable statements." Porter apologized, saying he didn't mean to offend anyone "except Winslow." So we can see how effective that monetary punishment was as a teachable moment.

But Porter's $10,000 fine came before the NFL officially issued its now famous get-tough Personal Conduct Policy in 2008, a set of guidelines so strict and so broad in interpretation that it has given commissioner Roger Goodell great latitude to throw the book at numerous high-profile players. The NFL Personal Conduct Policy is all of four pages long, and includes this very sweeping admonition to all NFL players, coaches and employees of what it considers a violation: "Conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players."

Johnson went beyond Porter's on-the-field behavior. The Kansas City former Pro Bowler used the words "fag", "faggot" and "Christopher Street boy"—showing some knowledge of gay culture—to mock fans in a Twitter meltdown. After hurling the F-bomb at reporters. Johnson’s agent ridiculously tried to claim that his client had no idea "faggot" was an offensive phrase.

Since being drafted by the Chiefs in 2003, Johnson has been arrested at least four times for violent episodes against women, including beating an ex-girlfriend and spitting in the face of a woman at a Kansas City nightclub. Many Kansas City Chiefs fans have had enough of Johnson's off-the-field temper. More than 10,000 fans have signed a petition to plead with the Chiefs from allowing Johnson to set Kansas City's all-time rushing record. Apparently the Chiefs agreed with the fans and decided to cut Johnson.

So far, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL have been strangely silent on the Johnson fiasco, which Oustports describes as "disturbing."

More than 10,000 Kansas City Chiefs fans are circulating an online petition to prevent running back Larry Johnson from setting Kansas City's all-time rushing record. Fans are pleading with team officials to deactivate the controversial running back after he used gay slurs to lash out against reporters and fans over Twitter, reports FOX News.

The petition—which has garnered 10,716 signatures as of early Thursday—calls on general manager Scott Pioli to act before Johnson, 29, surpasses running back Priest Holmes for the team rushing record. "We are asking you, as fans of this team, this organization, and of the pride that this city has in the Chiefs, please deactivate Larry Johnson," the petition reads. "Please do not let his name sit atop the all-time rushing leaders in Kansas City Chiefs history. He needs a mere 80 yards to surpass Priest. He doesn't deserve that opportunity."

One fan writes: "It will be a travesty if he is allowed to return from his latest misconduct. Between beating women and voicing slurs toward fans and media, there is absolutely no reason this trash should even have a job, much less become the franchise's all-time leading rusher."

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson—who publicly used the words "fag" and "faggot" twice within a 24-hour period—was given what amounts to a one-game suspension. The Chiefs said Johnson would be suspended until Monday Nov. 9 for "conduct detrimental to the team" and the game checks and other lost revenue would amount to about a penalty of about $600,000, reports the Kansas City Star.

The Chiefs are off this week and will not play again until traveling to Jacksonville on Nov. 8.

For the past three days, the Chiefs have said they were “investigating” the situation which began after Johnson and the team suffered a major loss to the Chargers. Johnson called reporters "faggots" and called a fan "fag" in a gay-baiting Twitter rant that also insulted his coach.

In the uproar following the anti-gay remarks, the former two-time Pro Bowl player "apologized" to NFL fans, Chiefs fans, teammates and staff—everyone but gays. It was obvious Johnson was not sorry about demeaning gays. Kudos to the Kansas City Chiefs for hitting Johnson—who boasts on Twitter about how much money he makes—where it hurts.

Johnson becomes the latest footballer to be disciplined under tougher new NFL regulations. Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett was fined for his ridiculous homophobic, n-word laced YouTube "rap".

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson––who isn't having the best season, btw––is under fire for hurling the word "fag" and "faggot" two times in as many days, Outsports reports.

"When reporters entered the Chiefs locker room on Monday, Johnson said he was not answering any questions until Thursday. He then uttered this under his breath, according to radio station KCSP and Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star: 'Get your faggot asses out of here.' [Sunday] Johnson got into a Twitter spat with a fan, he called the fan a 'fag,' according to Yahoo Sports, which monitored the exchange: think bout a clever diss then that wit ur fag pic. Christopher street boy. Is what us east coast cats call u.'"

The Chiefs and the NFL are investigating both incidents. GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios is demanding the NFL to discipline Johnson. Says Barrios: "All too often this is the word that is used to ridicule and harass young gay and transgender athletes on local sports fields across America. Professional athletes who use this word need to be held accountable for feeding a climate of intolerance toward our community. NFL officials need to take action and condemn this and future uses of this anti-gay epithet."

Johnson's history includes at least four criminal and violent episodes against women. And referencing New York's West Village hangout for black and Latino LGBT youth doesn't really help his case. But brothas in Maryland know about that? Really?
