WATCH: Laura Bush: "Gay Couples Should Have Rights Everyone Has"

Laura Bush appeared on Larry King Live last night to discuss her new book Spoken from the Heart. The former First Lady also discussed her views on abortion (pro-choice), gay rights and same-sex marriage.

"There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman," said Mrs. Bush. "But I also know that when couples are committed and love each other, they ought to have the same rights as everyone else."

You'll recall that last month we posted an excerpt from the book where the First Lady says she asked George "not to make gay marriage a significant issue" in the 2004 election because they have "close friends who are gay or whose children are gay."

Laura Bush Warned George Against Making Gay Marriage an "Issue"

GWB is "not" a very good listener, at least not when the missus is concerned. Politico's Mike Allen excerpts this passage from Laura Bush's memoir Spoken from the Heart, which drops on Tuesday:

"In 2004 the social question that animated the campaign was gay marriage. Before the election season had unfolded, I had talked to George about not making gay marriage a significant issue. We have, I reminded him, a number of close friends who are gay or whose children are gay. But at that moment I could never have imagined what path this issue would take and where it would lead.”

On page 306, the First Lady says the "strategy of making Mary Cheney’s private life an issue failed with voters in November of 2004."
