A bittersweet day for British discus champion Lawrence Okoye. The 19-year-old boasts the British discus record , the longest throw by a teenager in history and is highly favored to win gold at London 2012 ... but missed out on a podium place at today's AVIVA UK Trials and Championships in Birmingham.
"Okoye opened with 58.67m – some nine metres down on the 67.63m UK record he set earlier this year," reports Athletics Weekly. "But as the pressure increased his distances decreased and that remained his best effort of the day, finishing fifth."
Today's competition was for a place on the British team in the World championships in South Korea in August. Today's first and second place winners are assured a berth. The selectors will determine does Okoye get the third spot.
The former rugby player only began discus training last September. Looking good from angles, right? One more from today AFTER THE JUMP ...
