Diana Waterman, the newly elected First Vice Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party, has named her black Angus cow "Oprah." Waterman noted on Facebook that the cow recently birthed a calf.
Sveinn C. Storm, a Republican who publishes an Queen Anne County-focused blog called "Pave Our County?", says that naming a cow after a Black celebrity who has publicly struggled with her weight is "precisely why an enormous number of Americans view Republicans as racists."
As a Republican, I do not believe that Diana Waterman comes even close to promoting a positive image for the party. There is a slim chance that Diana Waterman names all of her pets after prominent black Americans she admires, but I doubt it. In fact, I’m betting she names her new calf "Michael Steele." Perhaps she will give him a quick call and see if he’s okay with that."
The Maryland Republican Party, which is (allegedly) the home of former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, has dismissed calls for Waterman to resign.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele predictably condemns the resolution:

In the wake of a scandal over lavish spending, Florida's Ginny Brown-Waite becomes the first sitting Republican member of Congress to publicly call for the resignation of RNC Chairman Michael Steele.
Only yesterday, North Carolina GOP chair Tom Fetzer became the first state party chairman to call for Steele's resignation.
Who would thought a night out at a lesbian bondage-themed
nightclub in West Hollywood would cause such a fuss?
UPDATE: By a vote of 219-212, the House passes sweeping and landmark health care reform. Thirty-four Democrats and 178 Republicans voted against it.The bill goes to President Obama to sign into law.

"According to the resolution, any Republican candidate who broke with the party on three or more of these issues—in votes cast, public statements made or answering a questionnaire—would be penalized by being denied party funds or the party endorsement. The proposed resolution was signed by 10 Republican national committee members and was distributed on Monday morning. They are asking for the resolution to be debated when Republicans gather for their winter meeting."
The list:
(1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill;
(2) We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run health care;
(3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation;
(4) We support workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check;
(5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants;
(6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges;
(7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat;
(8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;
(9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and
(10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership.
Only the Republicans would describe their opposition of expanding health care for the uninsured as "protecting vulnerable persons", but, logic never was their strong suit.
At the last Republican National Committee meeting, Chairman Michael Steele managed to steer clear of controversial resolutions—including one that equated Democrats with socialists. The deadline for submitting resolutions for the R.N.C. Winter Meeting is more than 30 days away.
"They can contemplate all they want to,
but the reality is if they want a figurehead chairman you can have a figurehead chairman, but it won't be Michael Steele,"
he said.
Steele
aides insist the chairman was not threatening to quit, but merely to
fight over retaining his authority. But his comments reflect the
persistent tension within the Republican National Committee over his
chairmanship.
It's really a pathetic reflection on the Republican Party. They pretend to join the 21st century by electing their first black chairman but Reagan-era party apparatchiks want to strip away his financial oversight. By all means—instead of focusing on how to re-tool the economy, win an election or recapture moderates in swing states, please keep up the infighting. Democrats and progressives are popping tons of popcorn with extra butter.
Later tonight, Republican state chairmen will vote on the funding issue, and, among others, whether to label the Democratic Party "Socialist." Really.

Olbermann mocked the the incredibly ineffective and latest anti-gay chairman of the Republican National Committee chairman on last night's Countdown: "In this country, weddings are a $70 billion a year industry. B, billion, as in Bridezilla. Seventy billion. ... Legalizing gay marriage is a gold mine to jump starting a lousy economy. Like, say, the one you Republicans gave us."
Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its
message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing
core conservative principles.
"Now all of a sudden I've got someone who wasn't a spouse before, that
I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse
that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele told Republicans
at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. "So how
do I pay for that?"
Steele is such a tool. Any employee marriages—straight or gay—and/or children could potentially cost more for a company that provides benefits. Why not only hire single employees? Doesn't sound very "family friendly", Mr. Chairman of the "Family Values" Party. Steele is reaching but apparently even he realizes bigotry isn't selling like it used to.
More problems for Michael Steele, the incredibly ineffective and latest anti-gay chairman of the Republican National Committee. Leading members of the RNC want to limit Steele's "control over the party's purse strings", the Washington Times reports.
A battle over control of the party's purse strings has erupted at the troubled Republican National Committee, with defenders of Chairman Michael S. Steele accusing dissident RNC members of trying to "embarrass and neuter" the party's new leader.
Randy Pullen, the RNC's elected treasurer, former RNC General Counsel David Norcross and three other former top RNC officers have presented Mr. Steele with a resolution, calling for a new set of checks and balances on the chairman's power to dole out money.
A party chairman without authority to write checks? Steele would be the party's "token" chairman in more ways than one.
