Still No Arrests in Murder of D.C. Trans Woman Nana Boo Mack

Three weeks after the vicious daylight stabbing of a young black transgender woman on a Washington D.C. street, there are no suspects, no arrests and few leads.

Metropolitan Washington D.C. police are offering a $25,000 reward to find the person who fatally stabbed  Tyli’a "Na Na Boo" Mack on August 26.  Mack and another young trans woman were attacked as they were walking to a drop-in center for transgender youth. Detectives are investigating this as a possible hate crime. The brazen daylight attack underscores the extent of anti-trans violence in out nation's capitol, reports Michael Lavers in EDGE Washington.

The Web site Remembering Our Dead indicates at least half a dozen trans Washingtonians have been murdered over the last decade. These include Stephanie Thomas and Ukea Davis, who were shot to death on Aug. 12, 2002, while they sat in their car in a Southeast intersection. Antoine Jacobs shot and killed popular entertainer Bella Evangelista on Aug. 16, 2003. And an unknown assailant bludgeoned Tyra Henderson to death in Northwest in April, 2000.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, maintains race and class remain a motivating factor behind the majority of anti-trans murders in Washington and elsewhere. "The kind of trans people getting murdered are not white, middle-aged transsexual women like me," she said. "It’s almost always lower income, trans-women of color. If you’re any of those things in the United States, you’re at the greatest risk of violence. It’s horrible."

In addition to being at the greatest risk of violence, the murders of black and Latina trans women are often unsolved, One notable exception: The hate crime killing of Lateisha Green, a young black transgender woman in Syracuse, NY. The attacker, Dwight DeLee, became only the second person in the United States convicted of a hate crime that involved the death of a transgender victim. The first conviction was the recent Angie Zapata case in Colorado.

Vigil for NaNa Boo Mack, DC Trans Woman Killed in Daylight Stabbing

Allyson Robinson, the first transgender staff person at the Human Rights Campaign, takes to Twitter to report the events at last night's vigil for Ty'lia "NaNa Boo" Mack. Washington D.C. police are offering a $25,000 reward for the person who fatally stabbed the 21-year-old transgender woman in broad daylight.

Transgender activist Mara Kiesling adds: "Pouring rain. Large crowd. Beverly, her mother is very strong."

Newschannel 8 reports the "DC transgender community is "outraged" after Wednesday's incident. A witness tells the Washingtom Blade that NaNa Boo and a friend, who was also stabbed, were attacked as they were walking to a drop-in center for transgender youth. Detectives are investigating this as a possible hate crime.

Fatal Stabbing of D.C. Trans Woman "A Possible Hate Crime"

The Wednesday stabbing of a young black transgender woman in broad daylight on a Washington street is being investigated as a "possible" hate crime based on information obtained from the surviving victim, authorities tell the Washington Post and the Blade.

Metropolitan D.C. Police announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the death of Joshua Mack of Clinton, Maryland, who used the name Tyli'a "NaNa Boo" Mack. Another transgender woman was also stabbed on the sidewalk in front of 209 Q St., N.W.. The stabbings occurred about two blocks from the North Capitol Street offices of Transgender Health Empowerment. Director of Programs Brian Watson says a THE client knows the survivor, says the victims were headed  to the agency and offers this account:

The two stopped in a Giant supermarket at Ninth and O Streets, N.W., a man walking with a woman started an argument with Mack. According to Watson, the surviving victim believes the unidentified man singled out Mack because he perceived Mack as being transgendered. The surviving victim said she and Mack left the Giant store and continued walking in the direction of the THE offices. The man who started the argument at the Giant store apparently followed them, Watson reported the surviving witness as saying.

When Mack and the surviving victim reached the 200 block of Q Street, N.W., en route to the THE offices, an exchange of words between the man and Mack "escalated," the surviving witness told the THE client. A fight ensued and the man stabbed Mack and the other victim, according to the surviving witness's account.

Meanwhile: NaNa Boo's family says they knew NaNa was transgendered "and respected and loved her" and are pleading for witnesses to come forward. The Blade reports: "Beverlyn Mack struggled to hold back tears as she and a daughter and son, who are Tyli'a Mack's siblings, spoke to reporters. 'I don't like it because my child was born just like everyone else—through a mother's womb,' she said. 'And I don't think it's fair for other people to take other people's lives.' "

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight to commemorate Mack's life at 6:30 p.m. on the 200 block of Q Street, N.W., at the site of the murder.

UPDATE: DC Police Offer $25K Reward for Killer of Trans Woman

An update to yesterday's vicious daylight double stabbing in Washington D.C. The Washington Blade and FOX 5 confirm one transgender woman is dead and another in stable condition after the incident. FOX 5 interviews a black transgender woman who lives on the street and reports police are "going door to door" to find the killer of "Nana Boo".

"One neighbor told FOX 5 they saw the two victims running from their attacker, and that one of them collapsed on the sidewalk. That victim later died. 'He said he couldn't breathe, "I can't breathe,"' said Frenzell Alexander, a neighbor. 'He came down 4th street and was gasping for breath and was bleeding from his neck.' Police announced that 21-year-old Joshua Mack of Clinton, Maryland was pronounced dead at Howard University Hospital just after 3 p.m. Police say the attacker is an unknown man in his early 30s. He was last seen wearing all black and running in the opposite direction on Q Street. 'I'm a transgendered woman, too,' said Warrena Earls, another resident. 'I know a lot of people in this city. I'm born and raised on Q Street. Nothing like this ever happened.' "

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the killer.

Nano Boo, who sometimes used her birth name of Joshua Mack, lived in Clinton, Maryland. Detectives are unsure if gender or perceived sexual orientation was a factor in the murder and stabbing. But the stabbings occurred about two blocks "from the North Capitol Street offices of Transgender Health Empowerment [which] provides drop-in services to transgender people, including transgender youth."

There will be a candlelight vigil for the two trans victims tomorrow night at 6:30pm 209 Q ST NW. Washington DC.

DC: Police Hunt for Suspects in Fatal Transgender Stabbing

One person is dead and another injured after "two transgender males were stabbed in northwest Washington D.C.", reports the Twitter-based news service BreakingNews.

"The stabbing happened around 2.50 p.m. local time, according to a police spokesman. One of the victims was taken to Howard University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after. The second victim survived the attack, but his condition was not immediately known. A police spokesman said both victims were transgender males, but said there was no information yet on a suspect or motive."

As is often the case in reporting transgender-related news, there are some discrepancies in the case. BNO and FOX report both victims were male, but WJLA reports "two females were stabbed." More details on the victims and the suspects as they develop ...
