Berlin 2009: British Olympian Phillips Idowu in Triple Jump

Taking a break from politics and the news and turning to the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin: One of the most anticipated competitions this week will be the men's triple jump, where British Olympian Phillips Idowu and Potuguese Olympian Nelson Evora will compete for gold. Idowu easily advanced in the qualifications and leads Group A with a jump of 17.32 meters.

The Olympic silver medalist opened with an effort of 17.10 but passed the qualifying mark with his second attempt. Says Idowu: "I feel good. I haven't jumped for a couple of weeks so it was good to get a couple of jumps out."

The men's triple jump final is Tuesday.

The flamboyant Idowu, known for his variety of hair colors, piercings and the err prominent tongue piercing he continually shows in photos, is the current Commonwealth Games champion and World Indoor champion. Idowu posed nude in an advert for Gatorade during the Beijing Olympics. No similar plans have been announced in Berlin. Yet.

Portugal's Nelson Evora on Track to Win Gold and Bulge in Berlin

Over the weekend, the IAAF World Championships in Berlin will showcase some of the finest track and field athletes from Europe and the Americas. One athlete sure to be on, err, prominent display at the Triple Jump will be Portugal's bulging export Nelson Evora, who is more popular in his nation than Cristiano Ronaldo and on track to become the first man ever to conquer two consecutive World gold medals in the men’s Triple Jump.

Last summer Evora won Portugal's first ever gold medal (above) in a field event when he captured the world title in the men's triple jump. The 25-year-old University of Lisbon student tells the IAAF he hopes to repeat his success by emphasizing speed: "The triple jump is a very complex event, and you always have to be trying to improve in every way, but just now I am working mainly on my speed, although strength must never be forgotten."

Nelson Evora, who is certainly fit in all the right places, hopefully slows down for some activities. Portugal's Nelson Evora Wins Gold in the Men's Triple Jump

Catching up with the overnight Olympic news and hotness. Rod 2.0 fave Nelson Evora wins Portugal's first gold medal in a field event when he captures the world title in the men's triple jump.

Evora jumped a best of 17.67 meters in a wet Bird's Nest stadium. That was five centimeters ahead of Phillips Idowu of Britain, who recently posed nude in the new advertising campaign for Powerade and was hailed as one of Britain's best hopes to win the gold in track and field. Leevan Sanders of the Bahamas took bronze with 17.59m.

Ah, yes. It will soon be spring and young men's fancy turns to ... well, sports, especially track and field. Not sure did you catch last weekend's 12th World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain, but the tracks (and tracksuits) were bulging with Europe's and the America's finest. One in particular, Portugal's Nelson Evora, was on, err, prominent display at the Triple Jump.

Last year, Evora took the gold for the same event, but unfortunately this year, "[t]he man who took that world title in Japan ... could do no better than bronze with 17.27m." Bronze or gold, we're sure that someone is rewarding Evora's prominent dedication to the sport. Nelson is fit in all the right places, no?
