The British-Nigerian track star won silver at Beijing 2008 in the triple jump. Idowu—known for his hair colors, prominent tongue piercing and prominent "packaging"—also posed nude in a brilliant series of adverts for Gatorade.

Now all the track and field hotness are doing it.

Berlin 2009: British Olympian Phillips Idowu in Triple Jump

Taking a break from politics and the news and turning to the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin: One of the most anticipated competitions this week will be the men's triple jump, where British Olympian Phillips Idowu and Potuguese Olympian Nelson Evora will compete for gold. Idowu easily advanced in the qualifications and leads Group A with a jump of 17.32 meters.

The Olympic silver medalist opened with an effort of 17.10 but passed the qualifying mark with his second attempt. Says Idowu: "I feel good. I haven't jumped for a couple of weeks so it was good to get a couple of jumps out."

The men's triple jump final is Tuesday.

The flamboyant Idowu, known for his variety of hair colors, piercings and the err prominent tongue piercing he continually shows in photos, is the current Commonwealth Games champion and World Indoor champion. Powerade, the official sports drink of the Beijing Olympic Games, debuts a saucy new advertising campaign across the pond. The print campaign features nude images of several of Britain's best Olympic hopefuls and was lensed by award-winning photographer Nadav Kander. The athletes include swimmer Gregor Tait, Olympic silver medalist Rebecca Romero and flamboyant triple jumper Phillips Idowu, who is hailed as one of Britain's best hopes to win the gold in track and field.

The images are quite spectacular and capture Idowu, muscles taut and poised, in mid-flight. Idowu tells the Daily Mail he had no inhibitions during the shoot. Thankfully. "This is definitely one of the more unusual shoots I've taken part in, but also one of the most enjoyable. Nadav made us all feel really comfortable, and we had a lot of fun. The Inner Gear for an athlete— how we train, what we eat, drink and when we sleep—is as important as what we wear, and it's great that a campaign like this brings it to life."

The original Greek Olympics were restricted to male athletes who competed in the nude. Must have been quite enjoyable to watch as a spectator sport.
