Several people emailed recently with links to stories about former B2K member Raz B allegedly in a coma in China. Raz B has been covered extensively at Rod 2.0 ... but the recent reports were not posted as I am often very reluctant to post stories that I believe are false.
The claims that Raz B were in a coma were a hoax, reports CNN. Read the last graph for an extra dose of shade.
The R&B singer was hurt in a nightclub brawl near Shanghai, but his injuries were not serious, manager Elayne Rivers told CNN Monday. "The comments about Raz being in a coma did not come from his official representative," Rivers said.
The singer's brother, who performs under the name Ricky Romance, said in a statement sent to CNN Monday afternoon that he had been "misled by unknown reasons." ...
A celebrity news website first reported the original member of the boy band B2K was in a coma Saturday, identifying its source as Toy Jones. Although Jones gave CNN the same information Sunday, she declined to give the name of the hospital -- only saying it was in the Zhejiang province near Shanghai.
CNN chose not to report the story until the story until details could be confirmed by the U.S. State Department, officials at the U.S. embassy in China or Chinese officials. Raz B also reached out personally to CNN in an e-mail asking that nothing be published. ...
Dozens of news agencies around the world—including in China—repeated the coma story, giving Raz B more publicity in one weekend than he's likely had since his group disbanded nine years ago.
"TMZ first reported the coma story, [claiming] Raz was placed on life support a day after undergoing surgery for injuries suffered from getting smashed in the face with a bottle while performing at a club in China," reports E!
De'Mario Monte Thornton—better known as Raz B or Raz—was one of the founding members of the chart-topping boyband B2k. The group took off in 1998 and disbanded in 2004. After the breakup, Raz went out of his way to cultivate gay fans, performing at several Black gay prides and portraying an HIV-positive gay youth on the groundbreaking television series Noah's Arc, among other things.
In 2007, Raz made international headlines after claiming in a YouTube video that he was molested by another singer and B2K's former longtime manager. Raz later retracted those claims ... and has since made additional claims that he and his fellow band members was sexually molested and/or exploited.
Raz was formerly an LGBT ally but has since gaybaited a number of entertainers. In early 2011, Raz and his brother Ricardo "Ricky Romance" Thornton were engaged in a Twitter and YouTube war with former B2K lead singer Omarion. Ricky Romance blasted Omarion and claimed the singer was "fully gay" and it was an "open secret" in the industry.
Hopefully Raz will get the help that he needs. And it's even more obvious after this latest incident that an intervention is long overdue.
