Self-hating much? Republican California Senator Roy Ashburn, who has "voted against every gay rights measure in the State Senate since taking office" and was arrested for DUI early Wednesday after leaving a popular Sacramento gay bar, comes out on a Bakersfield radio show. Unfortunately he shows no remorse for his anti-gay voting record.
Said Ashburn while appearing on Inga Barks' AM show: "I am gay. And so, those are the words that have been so difficult
for me for so long. But I am gay. It is something that is personal and I
don't believe I felt with my heart that being gay wouldn't affect how I
do my job."
Ashburn tried to rationalize his extreme anti-gay record: “I felt my duty, and I still feel this way, is to represent my constituents. I believe firmly that my responsibility is to my constituents. I will take a careful look at each measure and apply that standard. How would they vote on this? How would they want me to vote on this."
The disgraced state senator, who is in his second and final four-year term, is expected to return to the Capitol today when the Senate meets for a floor session. The conservative radio host asked Ashburn if he was "going to live this lifestyle now" in his district. Ashburn replied, "I pray to God I can find peace. I want to go back to the senate and work hard for the people of my district."
Sort of a change from the standard operating procedure when anti-gay politicians are busted, a la' Larry Craig's "I am not gay" defense. But another self-hating homocon still officially trading in homophobia. Yawn. Listen to the two-part interview AFTER THE JUMP ...
