An anti-gay Baptist pastor who donated to the Prop 8 campaign is being held in Sacramento County Jail on $6 million bail, facing multiple counts of sexual child molestation. Tom Daniels was arrested December 9 but it was only made public over the weekend, reports the Sacramento Bee. Daniels has been employed as a foster parent and day care provider, and currently is the head pastor at the Rio Linda Baptist Church.
[Citrus Heights Police] Lt. Ray Bechler said police had postponed publicizing the arrest while they continued their investigation into the case. The District Attorney's Office's increased Daniels' bail from $1 million to $6 million earlier this month because Daniels was considered a flight risk, Bechler said.
Bechler said the charges against Daniels involve incidents that allegedly occurred between June 2004 and June 2007. Citrus Heights Police investigated an initial complaint in 2008 but were unable to come up with enough evidence for the DA to file charges, he said. In recent months, another victim came forward. The district attorney filed charges Dec. 9, and Daniels was arrested the same day.
Despite the mounting evidence and the multiple sex offender charges, the anti-gay Baptist congregation stands by their pastor, reports the Modesto Bee.
The board of a Rio Linda church, whose pastor has been arrested on suspicion of child molestation, on Saturday released a statement of support. "Until such time as the courts prove Pastor Tom Daniels guilty, we have an obligation to support him and his family," said the statement. The statement also said that accusations such as those facing Daniels need to be tried in the court and not the media.
