· Today is Day Three of the general convention of the Episcopal Church of the USA. The volatile issue of gays and the church is threatening a split from the worldwide Anglican Communion.
The conference was addressed by the Archbishop of York, the Right Reverend Dr. John Sentamu—the Church of England's first black archbishop and second-highest-ranking official. Senatmu opposes gay bishops and reminded delegates his views are shared by the majority of the communion.
Progressives within the church say they have the votes to defeat a moratorium on gay bishops. This could lead to the ECUSA breaking into two wings, or, splitting from the worldwide communion.
· More fallout from the Episcopal split over gays: Rev. Tracey Lind, the lesbian dean of Cleveland's Trinity Cathedral, has withdrawn as a candidate for the bishop of Newark, NJ.
· Methodists may be united but look at the world differently. Yesterday, the Mississippi conference of the United Methodist Church voted to reaffirm its committment against gays. Two weeks ago, the Minnesota conference endorsed gay priests and same-sex marriage. To be continued ...
· Australia: Under a new federal law, distributing porn to cell phones and video iPods will be punished by a prison term and/or harsh fines. Communications Minister Helen Coonan says authorities are also experimenting with PC-based content filters, another way to "protect children."
