Actor and activist Doug Spearman, the handsome openly gay co-star of Noah's Arc and the new feature film Noah's Arc Jumping the Broom, tapes a new public service announcement for NoOnProp8.
"I play a gay married man on television and in the movie but in real life I am just a gay California man," Spearman says. "Now I have the right to get married in California .. and there are a group of people who want to take that away from me. They want to write inequality into the straight constitution and turn back the clock and take away my civil rights. I am fighting hard so that will not happen."
Spearman, who is on the board of Equality California and the No on Prop 8 campaign, recently headlined a news conference featuring several black pastors against the toxic ballot initiative. One on the ministers is California SCLC President Rev. Eric Lee, who blasted black mega-church pastors who are embracing the discriminatory, anti-gay measure.
In a previous post, one reader described Doug Spearman as the "quiet giant" of the Noah's Arc. We'd have to agree. Spearman isn't the star, isn't the sex symbol and doesn't have the most memorable lines. But he was the only principal cast member who was openly gay during the run of the show, and, off-screen has been extremely dedicated to gay rights and equality. Simple, powerful, effective.

Doug is da man. Samuel L. Jackson is also narrating a spot.

This is great and i expect nothing less of Mr. Spearman. He is a great actor with a wonderful heart. Doug is doing his best to preserve marriage equality and advance gay rights.
Posted by: Femme 4 Femme | 31 October 2008 at 13:39
can we just ban marriage in general?
Posted by: blkbandit | 31 October 2008 at 17:52
and its always the fem dudes talking about marriage. whats that about?
Posted by: blkbandit | 31 October 2008 at 18:11
It's because most of us Fem dudes are the ones in the forefront of most of the activist work. Complete with queeny ways and feather boas and limp wrists, but boxing with the police, straights, butchy gays, and being bashed. It is us Fem dudes who are willing to be seen on tv and in newspapers and spat upon and fighting for all LGBT rights and thrown in jail, so that masculine dudes like you can have equal rights. That's what IT'S about.

Right On, Bill!

Doug Spearman is a fem dude? I must have arrived from another planet if he is a fem dude.
But Bill is right. The general (not absolute) rule is that the more masculine a man is, the more cowardly.

'The general (not absolute) rule is that the more masculine a man is, the more cowardly'
What 'rule' is that? That sounds like something Alex on Noah's Arc would say. OH THAT'S RIGHT, Rodney Chester WILL NOT ADMIT HE IS GAY.
True, the original Stonewall riots were sparked by drag queens fighting back against police, but it's quite a quantum leap to say all masculine men are cowardly. First of all, masculinity is relative and, secondly, well, what about straight men?
Bravery or cowardice cannot be linked to masculinity. I have met more than enough brave queens and plenty of unclockable trade that were out and proud. And I have met too many trifflin queens and cowardly masculine DL types.
My father, god rest his soul, was very masculine and very brave.

Blkbandit, that was a really dumb thing to say, but I suppose you thought it was witty.
i totally agree with Bill. I don't have a problm with people knowing I am gay or a queen. And I don't have a problem marching for my rights or trying to make this world a better place. i donate to hiv and gay charities when i can, even if it is only ten or twenty bucks, and try to support blogs like rod's buy reading and visiting advertisers.
now what have you done to make yourself PROUD today? besides hang out on A4A?

Noah's Arc is a fantasy world. It is an alternative universe where the black gay feminine men are pursued by strong muscular black men. The femme queens are the prized catches that everyone wants.
Of course it has no basis in reality.

I agree with Bill and Femme4Femme. I am not sure why people are so quick to bash feminine gay men. That has nothing to do with marriage, there are masculine gay men who get married and feminine gay men. This is a very silly conversation, have we learned nothing.

Miss Greg G, there was no point in bringing Mr. Rodney Chester into this conversation. This is an A and B conversation about Doug Spearman and Prop 8 so please C your way out! For the record, Rodney Chester has appeared at a fundraiser to raisemoney to fight Prop 8, it is his call when he wants to share details about his private life.

This has nothing to do with femme vs butch or top vs bottom. Just because someone with 'femme' in their screenname praised Doug Spearman, why make that an issue.
Posted by: Heywood | 01 November 2008 at 13:35
my main issue is the fact that gay men always want acceptance from straights and its always the femme dudes making the most noise. i am proud of who i am but i rather focus on economic and political clout. dont you see whenever someone says something reckless about jews they are quickly dismissed. we need to come together like that and stop all this shouting about equal rights. make the pink mafia a reality cause if you have the money and the means people will not fuck with you.

"We need to come together like that and stop all this shouting about equal rights"
That was the most ridiculous thing you have said so far.

in africa fem dudes are usually killed. times like these i wish i was back in the motherland.
Posted by: blkbandit | 01 November 2008 at 17:22
jean grey are those "masculine" men parading you out in public or only calling you to meet at your place around 4am. most femme dudes i know are sidepieces or jump offs.
Posted by: blkbandit | 01 November 2008 at 17:23
BLKBANDIT Not sure what you meant by that Africa comment, but we do not wish violence upon anyone here. No more comments along that line.
