WELL, MERRY CHRISTMAS INDEED...

Chitown Kev

Here goes the President again, overstating the case.

Not that passing HCR isn't an important piece of social legislation but...the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Medicaid...

M. Mark

"This is the most important piece of social legislation since the Social Security Act"...

But only now, after is passed, will he "roll up" his sleeves to hammer out the details.

Sorry, not impressed anymore, especially after he denied campaigning on the public option and talking about it since he's been in office. "Just words....."

DH

I'm sorry, but what a bunch of baloney. The White House has been involved in these negotiations from the start, they've had people up on the Hill lobbying for this bill, and the president has been arm-twisting people at the White House. Is the bill everything Obama said it would be? Certainly not. Could they have taken a larger role in negotiations? Definitely. But stop pretending he's just now joined in this effort. By my count, Obama's personally been up on the Hill at least 2 times since his speech back in September. That may not seem like a lot, but when you think about the fact that he's the President, and usually calls people to the White House instead of going to them it's actually a bigger effort than most Presidents make.

Congress and the President are co-equal branches of government, it's not his job to brow-beat them.

You have it backwards. The president doesnt need to twist 'arm twist people at the White House' because they WORK FOR HIM. Presidents (see: Bush, Clinton, Reagan etc) often twist, pressure, lean, give pork to Congress to support their bills. For example, the White House gave BEN NELSON millions for Nebraska to vote for this bill after he threatened not to.

Obama admits he had very little influence on the bill's outcome which is why he NOW says he will be hands on.

The bill isnt great but its something. But the president didnt fight for anything because never fights for anything. Everything is a compromise. I would be singing his praises with all this compromise IF he actually fought for something and this was the result. And yes it is the president's job to push for legislation...thats why we elected him, not simply to rubber stamp or veto congress, like some upper level manager processing job applications.

But if you want to keep telling yourself that the leader of the free world just sits back, hoping and praying a bill comes to his inbox that he can sign, go ahead. Question: If Obama is so powerless, then why he defend him so much?

George Bush had a 50 and a 51 Republican senate and he rammed through a helluva lot. Because he knew what he wanted and he lead. Let's be clear...Bush and the GOP 'lead' this country down the toilet, into a war and a meltdown, but they the operative word is 'lead'. They had an agenda and they (unfortunately) pushed it.

Obama is a not a leader. He gives great speeches but at heart is a compromiser. There is no way in hell you run on the public option and against mandates...and once in office you push a public option and no mandates...and settle for mandates and no public option. And fining people if they dont buy insurance? He attacked Clinton and Edwards on this same position. Srsly

And now to deny he ran on the public option? Is he also claiming he didnt oppose mandates? Now the White House says "change" Don't Ask Dont Tell as opposed to "repeal". What about DOMA? ENDA? Seriously, what is next, because we saw this with FISA, Gitmo, climate and now HCR. It's a very very serious problem and its about time people in the community recognize.

I was the biggest Obama supporter during the primaries. But he and the Democrats have seriously hurt morale in the party going into midterms. All I want him to do is lead on something, anything, and not compromise.

Would you trust your husband or BF if he consistently broke promises? NO. You would say actions speak louder than words. You would still love him but know that you couldnt trust him. I trust Obama no more or no less than any other president or politician. And I will look at him the same way.
