It's news like this that makes it hard to come to this site yet makes it required reading. It hearts my heart that people are treating other human beings like this over something as inconsequential as who you're attracted to.

Correction: It breaks my heart...

I wonder where is the outrage and anger directed at incidents like these in present day. It astonishes me that there is more passion, more empathy, more anger, and more frustration directed at the racially discriminatory and bigoted acts of the past than there is about the genocide in Uganda or the continuing marginalization of LBGT in the African diaspora or present day issues.

Of course, knowing many folks, they'll use the magical sky god as an excuse/justification as for this type of barbarity. They'll claim they're the only ones to have a monopoly on who can complain about discrimination, bigotry and prejudice and who, on top of hierarchy, gets to dictate which groups can and cannot complain about discrimination.

Don't forget the "Homosexuality is a White man's disease" or those crappy conspiracy theories by Black nationalists. This is the same country notorious for sex tourism, the boasting of promiscuity, sexual conquests in its music and what not and jackasses want to talk about Jesus, morality and that crap.

The people of Latin America and West Indies are the embodiment of hypocrisy and religious bigotry. Don't freaking care if that's politically incorrect, these people love to think they're so conservative, so Biblical, so righteous because they scream the Lord's Holy name on a Sunday, because these Bible thumpers think any mention of God or religion is evidence of deep, profound spirituality or these thugs having tattoos of bloody Jesus on the cross or the Virgin Mary or quoting Bible scriptures up their asses makes them so Christ-like. These freaking patronizing, sugar-coated, Pollyanna "Liberal" Christians trivializing harsh reality that many face in this world if they're LGBT, especially of color.

These pathetic excuse of human beings share something in common with their European/White oppressors. They perpetuate they same bigoted, the same condescending, the same primitive, the same elitist attitudes, prevalent in colonial society. Attitudes they claim to be victims of but in truth, are the perpetrators of such.

And the end of the day, no one give's a rat's ass and nothing get's done and we get more additional lip service and sound bites. Just more garbage about having the need to stick together against our oppressors, they're not true Christians, how we have to show these animals, the freaking barbarians, compassion and love, forever following that tired Gandhi and MLK philosophy that basically renders us a joke and easy target.

It is ever becoming sicking that is is becoming the normal to hear these type of stories in the West Indies and Africa. No surprise there. Like any good pertaining to LBGT comes from those specific regions.

Thank God I live in America...People can be so evil...But as the saying goes...every dog has his day...and these animals will have theirs.People please pray for Jamaica.

Folks, there are soooooo many other places on the globe where GLBT people are welcomed, open arms -- places readily to open the doors to resorts, restaurants, clothing shops, clubs, etc. with smiles and warmth. Why even waste ur time in Jamaica? I feel sorrow for the GLBT people struggling. But that country needs to be hit in the pocketbook. I don't see why more worldwide travel agenices or tourism depts of various govt's get together and official ban countries like Jamaica

Mel Smith

People need to stop going on vacation to Jamaica. CNN and everyone should be reporting this. If heterosexuals are our allies, they would not vacation in Jamaica.

They are monsters that don't respect human rights. You cannot not use the 'culture' argument to justify oppressing a group of people. It's no different than South Africa using a 'culture' argument to defend apartheid. That's a bullsh!t excuse.

Boycott their ass$s until they act like decent human beings with sense!

The other guy

I agree with the above posters. Homophobes in other parts of the world (or here in the US for that matter) are not given a pass, and they should not be either. As the above poster said the 'culture' argument is bogus and is not a good defense. My ex is West Indian and he found 101 ways to excuse the promiscuity and infidelity they are known for in the islands, saying that many of them feel that monogamy is "against the will of God" ... SMH ... Not all West Indian people are bad or antigay but a message definitely needs to be sent. There are too many other places in the world where we can go and feel safe.

Stomach-churning report. JFAG have said in the past that sanctions won't work - Jamaica is a poor island. Whilst I understand the call for boycotts we need to understand how the current, rampant violence in Jamaica started - from the USA arming the Right and Cuba/USSR arming the Left in the '70's. It's spiraled completely out of control since then. The violence affects all communities in Jamaica - obviously being LGBT our brothers and sisters there are bottom of the pile and come in for the most terrible grief. Jamaica was not always like this. It doesn't have to be like this in the future. If you want to help change things don't holiday in Jamaica by all means but make a donation to JFLAG, an amazing, brave, bunch of people. One Love.

Agreed with Bernie and Mel,..I have decided that I will not be giving my dollars to any country that promotes homophobia or inequality.

We should be practicing the same with companies as well (Walmart, Verizon, Exxon, Chick Fil-A etc..) Stop supporting these bodies who's leadership and actions suggest they prefer you not exist.

Xander

When a friend of mine went to Jamaica last year, I told her I would never go there because of this type of violent homophobia.

Thank you Rod for reporting this because I don't see any other gay blogs/sites (e.g., Towleroad) even mentioning this incident. Shame.

thegayte-keeper

I am in no to visit Jamaica!

Jerry

A few years ago I wrote to one of the political organizations in Jamaica that was going to discuss homophobia in Jamaica. I am sure they did not accomplish anything that helped the LGBT community. I doubt if truth was represented. In my letter I said I would not spend one penny in Jamaica.

Also I do not watch the Grammies anymore. They honor the murder music singer (can't remember if it is Beenie Man or Bantu)and give him a Grammy. I cannot believe they would honor someone who sings about murdering gays.

Also one of those murderous singers I cited above sang at a concert in Uganda last year, which was sponsored by Pepsi. I have not drunk Pepsi since I became aware of this.

As implied above by a couple of other contributors, so many religions, their sick, lying, hypocritical leaders and their mindless and hate-filled followers are the main sources of homophobia.
